Parlare is a regular, first conjugation verb that means to speak, to talk.
Regular -are-verbs are characterised by having the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, and -ano in present tense indicativo, and the endings -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano in the imperfect tense.
As is common for -are verbs, the past participle of parlare has got the ending -ato, making it parlato. It uses the auxiliary verb avere when forming compound tenses.
- Fabio mi ha parlato dei suoi problemi (Marco told me about his problems)
- Abbiamo parlato con il dottor Bianchi (We had a conversation with doctor Bianchi)
Parlare is an intransitive verb, that does not take a direct object. Moreover, it cannot be followed by an infinitive.
Study tip! Although parlare is the most commonly used verb to refer to the action of speaking, this verb has not the same meaning as “dire” (to say).
- Dobbiamo parlare del tuo lavoro (We need to talk about your job) (You are referring to a conversation between two or more people)
- Devo parlare con I tuoi genitori (I need to speak to your parents) (In this case, you refer to a one-sided conversation)
