Portare is a regular, first conjugation verb that means to bring, to carry.
However, portare can have different meanings, such as to wear, to bear, to result. It is also used with several figures of speech.
- Mia sorella è la ragazza che porta gli occhiali (My sister is the girls who wears glasses)
- Porti ancora rancore? (Do you still bear a grudge?)
- Una risposta sbagliata potrebbe portare a fallire l’esame (One wrong answer can result in failing the exam)
- Porta pazienza! (Be patient!)
Regular -are-verbs are characterised by having the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, –ate, and -ano in present tense indicativo, and the endings -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, –vano in the imperfect tense.
Like most other first conjugation (-are) verbs, the past participle of portare ends in -ato, making it portato. It uses the auxiliary verb avere in compound forms, and it is a transitive verb, meaning it takes a direct object.
- Posso portare mia sorella alla tua festa? (Can I bring my sister to your party?)
- Ho portato una torta. Vuoi assaggiarla? (I have brought a cake. Do you want to try it?)
When followed by the preposition a, portare means to lead to. In this case, portare becomes an intransitive verb.
- Questa situazione porterà a una marea di problemi (This situation will lead to a whole lot of problems)
