Conjugation of Italian verb ‘riuscire’ - Commonly Used Words

Riuscire is an irregular, third conjugation verb that means to succeed. Other verbs of the same type as riuscire include uscire.

Like most other third conjugation (-ire) verbs, the past participle of riuscire ends in -ito, making it riuscito. It uses the auxiliary verb essere in compound forms.

Riuscire is often confused with another Italian verb, that is potere. Usually, they both mean “be able to”. However, their meanings changes based on the context. Potere refers to something you can do, or that you have the power to do. On the other hand, riuscire is used when you succeed in or are good at something. Let’s have a look at the following examples:

  • Posso insegnare la grammatica Italiana (I can teach Italian grammar) (You are capable of doing it because you can speak Italian)
  • Riesco a parlare in italiano (I am good at speaking Italian) (No matter if you are a native speaker: when you speak Italian, you succeed at doing it).

Please, note that both potere and riuscire can be used together to express a stronger meaning.

  • Vorrei potere riuscire a scrivere un libro (I wish I could write a book)

Riuscire is an intransitive verb. It is always followed by the preposition a when an infinitive follows it.

  • Devi riuscire a vincere la gara (You must succeed at winning the challenge)
  • Non ho bisogno di aiuto, posso riuscirci da solo. (I don’t need any help, I can do it on my own)

Below are the conjugations for the verb in tables, with example sentences and translations underneath.
