How to conjugate Italian verb ‘conoscere’ - Commonly Used Words

Conoscere is an irregular, second conjugation verb that means to know, to be aware of.

Like many other second conjugation (-ere) verbs, the past participle of conoscere ends in -uto, making it conosciuto. It must be noted that around four out of five of the 50 most used -ere verbs are irregular. Also, verbs that end in -scere or -cere in the infinitive form add an -i before the -uto ending. This is true for verbs such as conoscere (conosciuto – to know), piacere (piaciuto – to like), crescere (cresciuto – to grow up), and tacere (taciuto – to stay silent).

Conoscere is a transitive verb that uses the auxiliary verb avere in compound forms. It also uses the verb essere for its passive form.

  • Ho conosciuto mio marito un anno fa (I met my husband one year ago)
  • Questo libro è conosciuto in tutto il mondo (This book is known all around the world)

Study tip! In English, you use the verb “to know” either to mean that you know someone or how to do something. However, in Italian there are two different verbs: sapere and conoscere. Although they both mean to know, their usage is different. It is very important to understand the differences between these two verbs, so that you can use them correctly.

Sapere means that you are able to do something, or that you know about a situation or a fact. Differently, if you want to say that you know someone or a specific place, you use conoscere.

  • Sai cucinare?” “No, so solo fare la pizza” (“Do you know how to cook?” “No, I only know how to make pizza”)
  • Sapevo che non sarebbe arrivato (I knew he was not going to arrive)
  • Conosco quell’uomo, è il marito di Giulia (I know that man, he’s Giulia’s husband)
  • Conoscono bene Milano, ci vivevano in passato (They know Milan very well, they used to live there in the past)

Below are the conjugations for the verb in tables, with example sentences and translations underneath.

  • Conoscevo quella strada, i miei genitori abitavano lì (I knew that street, my parents used to live there)
  • Ti ricordi dove avevamo conosciuto quella bella ragazza? (Do you remember where we met that beautiful girl?)
