Italians are famous for telling stories. Thus, “dire” is one of the most used verbs by Italian speakers and learners. It means “to say”, “to speak”, “to tell,” and even “to recite”. Since it ends with -ire, “dire” is a third conjugation verb.
Other verbs of the same type as dire include benedire, contradire, predire, ridire, maledire.
The verb is always followed by the preposition di when it is followed by an infinitive. The verb can be followed by both a and di in the same sentence, as in dire a [person] di [infinitive].
However, it is also an irregular verb, that doesn’t follow the standard -ire conjugation. For example, unlike most -ire verbs, where the past participle has an -ito ending, the past participle of dire is ending in tto making it detto. It uses “avere” as its auxiliary as in “Ho detto”, meaning “I have said” or “I said”.
Confused? Don’t worry! With our conjugation tables, you will easily learn how to use this verb, and you will be ready to “dire” your best stories to your Italian friends.
