Conjugation of Italian verb ‘cercare’

Cercare is a regular, first conjugation verb that means to seek, to look for.

Devo cercare un lavoro, mi servono soldi (I got to look for a job, I need some money)
Stiamo cercando delle risposte alle nostre domande (We are seeking answers to our questions)

Sometimes, it is also used to mean to wish, to ask for something, to try.

Si sono appena sposati e cercano la felicità insieme (They are just got married and wish to be together)
Mio fratello continua a cercare soldi dai nostril genitori (My brother keeps asking for money from our parents)
Siamo stanchi, cerchiamo di dormire (We are tired, let’s try to have some sleep)

Regular -are-verbs are characterised by having the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, and -ano in present tense indicativo, and the endings -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano in the imperfect tense.

Like most other first conjugation (-are) verbs, the past participle of cercare ends in -ato, making it cercato. It uses the auxiliary verb avere in compound forms.

Ho cercato un lavoro per anni (I have been looking for a job for years)

The verb is always followed by the preposition di when it is followed by an infinitive.

Fai silenzio, sto cercando di dormire! (Be quiet, I’m trying to sleep!)
