How to conjugate Italian verb ‘sapere’

Sapere is an irregular, second conjugation verb that means to know, to be aware of, to learn how to.

Like many other second conjugation (-ere) verbs, the past participle of sapere ends in -uto, making it saputo. Bear in mind that it is, in fact, the majority of the most frequently used -ere verbs that are irregular. You can find additional information about irregular verbs on our website. It uses the auxiliary verb avere when forming compound tenses. However, it is not usually followed by the auxiliary essere to form the passive form. In these cases, it is preferable to use the verb “risapere” and it refers to a notion that is obvious or commonly known as a true fact. Bear in mind that often this conjugation requires to be followed by the congiuntivo tense.

È risaputo che agli italiani piaccia la pizza (It is known that Italians love pizza)

This verb can be followed directly by an infinitive and the preposition di. Sapere is a transitive verb, meaning it is always followed by a direct object.

Study tip! Just like sapere, conoscere is another Italian verb that means to know. Although they are sometimes used as synonyms, both verbs can also have different meanings depending on the context of the sentence. While sapere refers to something you are able to do, conoscere is used when you know someone or something.
